Over the next nine days, Burton's busiest calendar of the fall runs through a single address. The Texas Cotton Gin Museum at 307 N Main Street hosts the antiques show that closes Sunday. It is the starting line for Friday night's Wine & Wander, and it is the counter where you can buy tickets in person for Big Star Texas Night on November 7. If you live anywhere in Washington County and plan to spend a weekend in Burton before Thanksgiving, start at the gin.
The museum describes the Burton Farmers Gin as the oldest operating cotton gin in America. It has stood on its site since 1914 and runs on a 1925 Bessemer engine that the museum calls the largest of its vintage still operating in the country. The gin is recognized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Smithsonian Institution, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the National Register of Historic Places.
Most of the year the building runs at a quiet pace. The Texas Cotton Gin Museum and its gift shop are free to visit Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the museum says it is dog friendly. Guided tours of the gin start at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on those same days and take about an hour and a half. Each tour includes a short presentation on cotton and a 20-minute video, "Cotton: From Wagon to Finished Bale." Tours cost $8 for adults and $6 for students ages 6 to 18, seniors, first responders, veterans and college students. Children under 5 get in free.
For the next week and a half, the grounds around that machinery handle a lot more than tours.
Antiques at the Pavilions opened October 23 and runs through Sunday, November 1, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day on the museum grounds. Visit Brenham's listing promises covered shopping, free parking and RV spaces for rent on the lower field, booked through the museum at 979-289-3378.
With "covered" in the description, an unsettled forecast doesn't have to cancel a Saturday trip. The 9 a.m. opening also gets you in an hour before the museum's regular doors open. If you want a gin tour while you're there, the 2 p.m. tour on Friday or Saturday fits around an afternoon of browsing, since tours don't run on Sunday.
On Friday, October 30, the antiques show stays open late for Burton's Wine & Wander, which runs 6 to 9 p.m. Destination Burton hosts the evening. You start at the Texas Cotton Gin Museum, pick up an event map, then walk through the participating businesses for shopping, signature drinks and curated stops.
This year's theme is Grease, and the organizers want 1950s attire. Visit Brenham's event listing asks, "Who would you like to be for a night? A Pink Lady? A beauty school drop out?" The Pink Door on Main, one of the shops staying open late, describes the night as a free event with a 1950s rock-and-roll theme.
Because the gin is where the map comes from, the easiest plan is to arrive before 6, park once, and do your last bit of antiques shopping before the walk starts.
| Date | Event | Where | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 23 to Sun, Nov 1 | Antiques at the Pavilions | Texas Cotton Gin Museum, 307 N Main St | 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. |
| Fri, Oct 30 | Wine & Wander, Grease theme | Starts at the gin museum, then downtown | 6 to 9 p.m. |
| Sat, Nov 7 | Downtown Burton market | Downtown Burton | 2 to 5 p.m. |
| Sat, Nov 7 | 16th annual Big Star Texas Night | La Bahia Turn Verein, 550 Hwy 237 | Evening, starting 6 or 6:30 p.m. |
The following Saturday splits into two parts. The downtown Burton market runs 2 to 5 p.m., with fresh produce, homemade goods and what the listing calls "treasures." That evening, the action moves out of town to the La Bahia Turn Verein and Dance Hall at 550 Hwy 237.
The hall has deep roots. The Handbook of Texas places the La Bahia community on the West Fork of Mill Creek, a quarter mile from State Highway 237 and fourteen miles southwest of Brenham. German immigrants settled it in the 1870s. A turnverein organized there on July 5, 1879, and was still active in 1988. In the 1930s, according to the Handbook of Texas entry on La Bahia, the La Bahia Dance Hall drew visitors from Brenham and other nearby towns. Nearly a century later, Big Star Texas Night is still bringing people to that same dance floor.
The Burton Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the 16th annual event. Two bands are booked: Sean Orr & Texas Gold, and Bob Wills' Texas Playboys under the direction of Jason Roberts. The evening also includes silent and live auctions and a brisket-and-sausage dinner "with all the fixins."
On ticket prices, the Chamber's event page doesn't quite agree with itself. The registration options list $62 for adults with dinner and the dance, $32 for the dance only, and $22 for ages 11 to 16. The written description says $60 for adults and $20 for ages 11 to 16, with food and drinks included, children 10 and under free, and a $2 service charge per ticket for online card purchases. The start time also varies between listings, from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Plan on roughly $60 for an adult with dinner, and check the page before you go.
Tickets are also sold in person at the Texas Cotton Gin Museum, which has been selling them since October 1. If you're at the antiques show this weekend, you can pick up next Saturday's dance tickets at the same stop and skip the online fee. For questions, the Chamber lists 979-251-4078 and [email protected].
Most of Burton's places to eat sit on West Washington Street, along Highway 290 or a few blocks from the gin. These hours come from the Burton Area Chamber of Commerce's eat-and-drink listings, which may not reflect show-week changes, so call ahead on a busy weekend.
On the shopping side, the Burton Bridge Ministry Corner Shoppe at 307 N Brazos St. is open year round Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and also during the shows. The Old 1900's Antiques & Mercantile at 12601 W. Washington St. sells vintage and antique goods.
Both of these weekends are crowded across the county, so the Burton plan has to fit around a few Brenham events.
Unity Theatre's production of Mirror Lake, a Steven Dietz thriller, runs October 29 through November 8 in the Studio at 300 Church St. Tonight's preview costs $23 and includes a talkback. Regular tickets are $27, and there's a director's chat on November 7. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays, so a Friday 8 p.m. show conflicts with Wine & Wander. A Sunday matinee pairs well with a last-day stop at the antiques show. Tickets are at UnityBrenham.org or 979-830-8358.
On Halloween, Downtown Brenham's Mask-erade on Main brings trick-or-treating to the Main Street businesses from 2 to 5 p.m.
The heaviest overlap is the weekend of November 6 to 8. The Fall Festival of Roses at the Antique Rose Emporium, 10000 FM 50, runs all three days. Friday is a ticketed Rose Education Day with workshops and a boxed lunch. Saturday and Sunday are free, with rose and garden presentations, food trucks and local artisans. A ticketed Fall Garden Party dinner on Saturday evening competes directly with Big Star. The First Fridays Farmers & Artisan Market sets up in the Commerce Street parking lot from 3 to 6 p.m. on November 6. That same day, Christmas Magic opens at Giddings Stone Mansion, 2203 Century Circle Drive, with rooms decorated for the holidays by Jennifer Hermann for the Heritage Society of Washington County.
If the Saturday free day at the roses is the only time that works, you can still fit in the Burton market at 2 p.m. and be out on Highway 237 for dinner and the Texas Playboys.
If you're thinking about land near Burton or La Bahia, a weekend between the gin on North Main and the dance hall on Highway 237 is a good way to learn the roads. Kalor West works across Washington County and is glad to talk through which roads and which towns suit what you want from the country. Let's Connect.
